Bento 43: The western bento

This bento isn't overly exciting, but it was still pretty good to eat anyway. Unfortunately I left my egg-molds and rice molds in Sydney (oops) and can't do as many cute things without them plus uni has started once again and sent all its students into a frazzle with all the work and assessments that have been dumped on us. This is a very western bento, it's not very elaborate but here it is anyway:

100_0763

Top left hand corner: sliced tomatoes, banana, home-made gluten free boller (Danish sweet buns) with nutella on them, celery and carrots sticks, gluten free pasta with a apricot and almond muesli bar (also gluten free)

Not shown: small sauce container filled with honey mustard mixed with whole egg mayonnaise (gluten free) for the carrot and celery sticks, another small container filled with grated cheese and sunshine punch juice. =)

I didn't really use an exciting lunch box today but it seemed to serve its purpose very well. I realised that this bento was too big for me, so in future i will use my smaller bento boxes. =) I'm not sure if nutella is gluten free (the ingredients didn't seem to indicate any wheat products), however if you are unsure please look on the nutella website for further information. I'm not celiac but I have a low wheat tolerance than most people (so most things i eat are gluten free). I will post again soon, please be patient however, I do have a lot of work to do at uni. =(

The benefits of bento making

I have posted a lot of my my own bento's on here, but I thought I would also make a blog entry about what is so good about them and why I make them and think that bento lunches are better than canteen/cafeteria lunches.

1. Bento lunches encourage the lunch-goer to eat a variety of fruit and vegetables (bento's a usually based on colour coordination, usually the more colourful the bento, the more variety of nutrients you are eating)

2. Bento's are cheaper than eating out and are much much healthier. I've seen canteen lunches (although these days the Aust. Government is stamping out selling bad food in schools) and I see a lot of processed or deep-fried options, and the sadest thing is... even though many people are given an alternative with healthy sandwiches, salads etc. they still seem to go for that deep fried food which you should only eat every once in a while.

3. Food allergies are much easier to handle when you make your own bento lunch. You know what's in it, you or a loved one are much less likely to have an allergic reaction from a bento lunch when all the allergy precautions have been taken at home.

4. For people who don't eat certain foods due to religious beliefs, a bento is a sure way to ensure that those foods are not eaten.

5. Left-overs are almost always used, reducing food waste and allows us to be much more economical ^^

6. Children love colour, a colourful bento will always attract the attention of children and encourage them to eat their vegetables (providing you make those vegetables tasty too).

7. It's something to look forward to at lunch time, a cute/tasty looking lunch always brightens up your day!

8. Bento's are rarely boring as everyday there is something different to eat.

9. It allows the bento-maker to be creative and make new foods

10. Making a bento yourself encourages others to make bento

11. Bento's don't have to include Japanese food in them, you can include whatever you like!

12. Bento's are not as time consuming as people think. If you are reasonably organised and make a lot of the bento food the night before (or use leftovers that have been in the freezer), you don't really consume alot of time. It is only time consuming if you want to make very fancy foods (cute shapes etc) or you aren't very organised.

13. Allows us to feel full (and not bloated) after eating. =)

14. People who make bento's usually lose excess weight because they are controlling their diet with good healthy food that hasn't been deep-fried or is full of salt/sugar and/or preservatives.

I could easily write more points but I think it will get too over-bearing haha. I won't probably be making any bento's until uni starts up again (at the moment there is no need for me to make bento's while I'm at home), I've been trying to find other photos of bento's that I have, but it seems many of them got deleted by a certain family member . I will try to make more bento's once I get back onto uni campus. <3

So if you've ever thought about bento making, it might be a good time to think about starting ^^ You don't have to be a creative artist to be a good bento-goer ^^

Bento 42: We love our lamb!

I don't usually cook a lot of lamb because where I live at the moment, lamb is very expensive (even though I do love eating it ^^). Actually this is the first time I've included lamb in my bento. The weather was much cooler when I packed this... so I didn't have to worry about my ice packs melting in the matter of seconds. Anyhoo... this is what I prepared. ^^

Top tier: Pumpkin that has been simmered in soy sauce, steamed broccoli, lamb cooked in honey garlic marinade (the people who lived on my block complimented on how good it smelt haha ^^), babybel cheese and an elephant sauce bottle filled with mint-sauce

Bottom tier: Japanese-style fried rice (consists of: short grain rice, soya sauce, mirin/sake, egg, green onion and salt and pepper to taste ^^)

Side dish: Sliced strawberries with a sprinkle of caster sugar (the strawberries were a little sour... but caster sugar seems to make them sweet... for best results... slice the strawberries and sprinkle them with sugar and a very tiny amount of water the night before to get a nice flavour ^^)

Snack: Golden Circle Apple puree (I didn't realise it was puree until after I bought it lol... still tastes good though ^^)

Not shown: Orange crush cordial drink ^^

I was quite happy with this bento as it turned out heaps better than some of the others I have made in the past! I guess I had a little more time for that extra effort and it paid off. The bento was great (especially the lamb and the rice... strawberries were also awesome).

Bento 41: The not-as-pretty yet just-as-tasty bento

I didn't have time to be pretty with this bento at all, I had a big day in front of me and I packed lunch to keep me going for a 9am-9pm uni day! Because of the heat I've been avoiding a lot of meat bento's (unless we get a cool change or something) despite my army of icepacks... they seem to melt completely within about 2 hours of being outside the freezer.  Anyway here is the not-so-pretty bento!

100_0136

^ Bottom tier: steamed basmati rice

Top Tier: Grilled eggplant w/ a hint of garlic and olive oil, steamed broccoli cooked with sesame oil and ginger (tastes good ^^), cherry tomato sliced in half, another babybel cheese

Side dish: Daal (indian lentil soup, meant to eat with basmati rice), don't ask me how to make this... my lovely friend made it for me and it is the BEST thing when heated and eaten with basmati. It doesn't look very appetising (I kinda dropped the container before the photo ) but it is very nice and it's not too spicy either ^^

Snacks: Petit miam strawberry flavoured yoghurt, yoghurt-topped strawberry muesli bar, strawberry hello kitty pocky (lol... lots of strawberry today ^^)

I'm starting to get sick of babybels... I've been eating those things continuously for weeks despite how great their invention is... I still have a few left in the fridge to get rid of =S

Not shown: bottled water and a small juice box/popper filled with apple juice.

Bento 40: The wonder of Kewpie mayonnaise

Kewpie mayonnaise (Japanese mayonnaise) in my opinion is probably the best I've ever eaten and this bento, I decided to be a bit more fattening and add a little indulgence to my bento. ^^

100_0125

^ Top Tier: Hard boiled egg topped with mayonnaise and green onion (it tasted really good ^^ Got that idea from Denmark), sliced cucumber, soy carrots and a babybel cheese... didn't have time to be creative with the veggies =S

100_0127

^Bottom tier: Pasta salad (consists of: pasta, green onion, mozerrella cheese and carrot sliced into very miniature cubes with mayonnaise misxed through)

Not shown: Aloe vera drink, strawberry yoghurt-topped muesli bar for snack

I really loved this bento, it was very hot and something like a cold pasta salad makes a bento lunch even more enjoyable. I kind of got sick of eating so much rice and pasta seemed to be the perfect alternative. ^^ If you are gluten intolerent (like me as I have recently discovered). Gluten free pasta is available to buy =D
